White City Central Line Sidings

Ian Ritchie Architects were commissioned by Chelsfield plc to re-conceive a Master Plan and Architecture for the urban regeneration of approximately 15 hectares at White City, London, as a local and regional shopping and leisure destination together with the creation of major new public transport interchanges for west London.

Part of the transport infrastructure works included the £80 million Central Line Sidings which provides sub-surface train stabling for 16 London Underground Central Line trains with associated plant rooms and staff accommodation.

The Sidings Stabling Area structure is a reinforced concrete box. The partially submerged Staff Accommodation is arranged over two levels with plant rooms, security control room and service yard located above ground and staff accommodation, including offices, meeting room, mess area, shower & changing facilities, workshops and storage, are located below at track level. A continuous rooflight provides the office spaces with natural light while a series of long vision panels provide those seated in the offices with views to the train stabling area.

Ian Ritchie Architects Ltd were one of two novated consultants completing the contractor’s design and provided an “assured design” through the London Underground assurance based approach for new works. This places particular emphasis on the management of design quality, compliance, change, maintenance and safety.
