Hermitage Riverside

When commissioned, the first questions we posed ourselves were:
What is the architecture of the River Thames?
Of what relevance is it today?
What is the future architecture of the river edge to be, and what is it to secure? In essence, we concluded that:
Land/water interface buildings historically generated a river façade and an inward urban façade (e.g. Greenwich, warehouses etc).
Current river architecture, where housing predominates, is generating a ‘river only’ façade and a ‘dustbin’ rear. Our design for this riverside residential project attempts to recognise the importance of the two-way ‘image’ as well asdrawing the existing inner urban area to the riverside.  We achieved this by exploiting route and landscape, culminating in a park by the river, which in turn ‘clothes’, in part, the new buildings and softens their crystalline edges.
