Ian gave the keynote speech at the IALD Enlighten Europe conference, 17 – 19 June at Hotel Pullman Paris Montparnasse.
Download his lecture LIGHT – Stillness and Movement which followed the President’s address at the EE26 Opening Welcome Session.
Ian’s design approach to light dissolves the boundaries between science, art and engineering, philosophy and technology. He explores both natural and artificial light as the first material of architecture that shapes and animates form, space, material and experience. Ian recognises that he does not know what light is, but knows that light and shadow, wave and particle, are interconnected and interdependent forces, giving rise to a dynamic system. This system oscillates between our cognitive selves and the world. Its qualities are fundamental to our sense of balance or imbalance in space, and in life.
