House at Cramond, Gabion Landscape, Edinburgh

The private client approached Ian Ritchie Architects for technical/engineering advice about stabilising an infilled earth area on a 30 degree slope in order to create a large, formal Italianate garden.

We responded to the archaeological and geological sensitivity of the site’s location and the need for an economical solution by designing a gabion wall which met both requirements, and without further digging into the hillside. In addition, the design allowed for horizontal planting levels to be integrated with the gabion wall. Maccaferri provided the cages and technical installation advice and the project was completed by the client with direct labour.
