The Kulturpalast Dresden (‘Palace of Culture’) is a modernist building designed by Wolfgang Hänsch during the era of the German Democratic Republic. It opened in 1969, and was used for concerts, dances, conferences and other events.
In 2009 the practice was shortlisted for the Dresden Cultural Palace competition which consisted of a new 1800 seat concert hall and a smaller one, and a new library housed in a listed early 60s building, for which the authorities wished to retain the façades and roofline.
The competition was won by gmp Architekten, and underwent several years of reconstruction beginning in 2012 and opened with a new concert hall in April 2017.
