Transport for London Bus Shelters

Transport for London Bus Shelters: PerspectiveTfL proposed a competition, to which eight other design firms were invited, to find a new design for a mass-produced passenger shelter, potentially significantly different from the existing stock, which can improve the customer experience, both within the environment of the physical shelter and in the provision of information and civic amenity, whilst meeting the rigorous demands and specific challenges that any bus shelter faces on the streets of London.

Our design was bold and based on simple open cube proportions and of a scale that adds presence in any streetscape, including Oxford Street. We proposed galvanised steel frames and modular components to enable different permutations depending upon size required, and location. The idea was to mark the spot where the new shelter was to be located by literally ‘branding’ the pavement with the Buses roundel logo. Foundations were simple. Cladding was clear laminated glass, integrating seats and advertising space, and designed to be prefabricated and able to be installed in one day following foundation and services preparation.
