CABE Education Network

Improving the quality of the built environment is the long-term aim of CABE, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. CABE Education has been established as a charitable foundation dedicated to unlocking the educational potential of the built environment. Plymouth Theatre Royal Production Centre, published by Categorical Books, is 14cm x 14cm, has 96 pages, a full description of the design process with colour photographs and drawings. Berkeley Homes

A second public exhibition was held at Lambeth College on 2nd, 3rd and 4th April 2003 showing the revised new mixed development scheme on a site adjacent to Tower Bridge and the GLA City Hall. A planning application has been submitted to London Borough of Southwark. There is approximately 11,000m2 of public cultural and community space accessed from an expanded Potters Fields Park, and 386 residential units, of which 30% will be available to a Registered Social Landlord for affordable or key worker housing.

A planning application has been submitted to the London Borough of Southwark by Berkeley Homes for a mixed development comprising more than 11,000m2 of public space, 386 residential units of which 30% are affordable / key worker, and Potters Fields Park increased by 40% in area. A further public exhibition is being planned.

Berkeley Homes have also recently appointed Ian Ritchie Architects to design a mixed development near Canary Wharf and will include several hundred new homes.

Wanda Diebolt, Directrice of DAPA , La Direction de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, will officially launch the 2nd Carnets Internationaux ‘Recent Innovative Social Housing in France and UK’, in Paris on 13th December 2002. CABE will be represented by Joanna Averley (Dir. Of enabling) and Alex Ely (Housing Co-ordinator).

Ian Ritchie Architects’ new stainless steel and glass extension will be watertight for Christmas. Fit-out will be in February 2003.

The Spire of Dublin

The three top sections were lifted as one piece into position on 21 01 2003 at 12.20. Thousands cheered.

The Spire of Dublin should be completed by the end of February 2003. The lighting at the top and the bronze base have yet to be installed, and the unveiling of the mirrored pattern around the bottom of the Spire is expected to occur when the Spire is officially inaugurated close to St Patrick’s Day, March 17th 2003.

Engineering and the Arts

Ian Ritchie will be one of four panelists speaking at the Royal Institution on February 12th at 19.00hrs. This will be a public discussion and is one of several initiatives aiming to strengthen perceived weak links between science and the arts.
