Works for the Dublin Commemorative Bridge have started on site, and a ceremony led by Minister Kevin “Boxer” Moran was held in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens on 30th October 2025.
The proposed combined pedestrian and cycle bridge will provide a new ceremonial entrance to the Irish National War Memorial Gardens (INWMGs) in Islandbridge, Dublin, and follows the historic proposed alignment of Sir Edwin Lutyens’ original sketch to connect the War Memorial Gardens to Phoenix Park.
“The memorial gardens are not easily approachable at present, and the proposed bridge will allow access to the gardens from the north side making it more accessible for visitors. It has been a specific objective of development plans for Dublin city since 2011.” OPW
The open international design competition in 2019 was won by ritchie*studio designing with schlaich bergermann partner.
The project is co-funded by the Office of Public Works (OPW) Ireland and the National Transport Authority.
The OPW has awarded the construction contract to John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd. who will prepare the site foundations, infrastructure and landscape and manage the process.
The bridge will be constructed using structural plate of clad steel – a 3mm stainless steel plate hot roll bonded onto a 20mm carbon steel plate, providing the combined qualities of durability, structural efficiency, corrosion resistance, and economy. The shot-peened stainless-steel finish to the structure will increase corrosion resistance and create a soft, light-reflecting surface, while the polished edge of the bridge will create a reflective line of natural light across the Liffey.
ritchie*studio also designed the Spire of Dublin which was formally opened in 2003.
