Shelter for Beirut

In the aftermath of the explosions which devastated Beirut on 4th August 2020, Ian Ritchie Architects responded to a direct request from friends in Beirut and together with Article25, we launched the Shelter for Beirut Appeal.

Despite great support from Will Hurst and the team at the Architect’s Journal, in the midst of a pandemic, it proved to be a tough time for fundraising and unfortunately we fell short of our £100k target. In March 2021, the decision was taken to close the appeal and to transfer the funds which had been raised to Arcenciel and this week we received confirmation that this transfer has been completed.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help with the appeal and all those who so generously made donations. The funds have now been received by Arcenciel and they continue to help the people of Beirut to rebuild their lives and their city. We continue to follow their progress and look forward to seeing much more of the repair work being completed now the weather is improving and Covid restrictions are being lifted.

We received the following note of thanks from Arcenciel which we would like to share with you:

“Thank you again for your support, warm words and thoughts. Indeed, in times like these, we gain strength and faith in our mission despite all obstacles, through organizations and dedicated individuals such as yourselves. Words cannot explain the enormous efforts rallied from around the globe to our cause. We are proud to have met and collaborated with your esteemed organization, and hope to be able to extend this collaboration further.”

Nadim Abdo, Programs Director, Arcenciel
