Hatfield College, Durham University

Following an invited competition, Durham University has commissioned a team led by ritchie*studio to design a new multi-purpose arts and performance building for Hatfield College. Hatfield, the second oldest of the 17 colleges of Durham University, includes 17th to 20th century buildings situated on the Bailey, immediately adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Castle.

The ambition is to create an outstanding and attuned work of architecture which will enhance and respect its historic environment set within the quadrangle at the heart of the College. It will provide high-quality adaptable space for the College and wider University to serve high quality music performance as well as other cultural, social and conference activities. The building will also be used by local cultural and community organisations. The architecture will therefore serve to enhance local aspirations and align with the Durham Place Partnership Initiative.

ritchie*studio is delighted to be working with Hatfield College, the University Estates, Gardiner & Theobald; Purcell, TGA Consulting Engineers, WSP, Gillieron Scott Acoustic Design, Stage Right Theatre Consultants, the Centre for Accessible Environments and DPP Planning.
